Bonny Eagle varsity places 2nd at invitational
Cheers from the Heart competition

After a disappointing experience at the SMAA regioal championship two weeks ago, the Bonny Eagle High School varsity cheerleading squad came home with something to smile about Saturday, Feb. 1. The team placed second at the Oxford Hills High School invitational cheerleading competition, "Cheers from the Heart." The money from this competition goes to local charities in Maine. This year there were 22 teams and three divisions: Class A and Class C Varsity, Class A and B Junior Varsity, and Class A, B and C Middle School.
Bonny Eagle brought its middle school team, junior varsity team, and varsity team. In their respective divisions, varsity placed second with 141.6 points, junior varsity placed second place with about 90 points, and middle school placed third with 80.4 points.
This year at Cheers from the Heart was by far the varsity’s best performance. Their stunts all hit, nobody fell during tumbling, and everyone jumped their highest and danced their best. They did not receive any deductions, like they had at regionals, where judges incorrectly counted the number of tumblers in the BEHS routine, costing the team fifth place and a trip to the state finals.
This competition was the varsity’s last of the season, and the last high school competition for the seniors.
"I’m proud of the team, and I think we did a really good job," says Amanda DeBaker, "After cheering for six years, it’s nice to end on a good note."
