Just as they did at the regionals a week ago, the Bonny Eagle girls cross country team ran away with the Class A state championships last weekend. The Scots were led (as usual) by senior Delaney Hesler, who turned in a time of 18:28
“I’m overwhelmed,” Delaney told the Portland Press Herald after the race. “I’ve been working for this for four years and I haven’t ever stopped thinking about the states. I’m just really happy I was able to put together a good enough race to win.”
Not only did Hesler win individual honors Saturday, in a time of 18 minutes, 28 seconds, but she led the Scots to a third straight state championship. Six Bonny Eagle runners placed among the top 30.
The Scots beat out runner-up Marshwood by 51-112. Senior Emmaline Pendleton recovered from an early fall to finish fifth. Sophomore Addy Thibodeau was 13th, just ahead of teammate Hannah Stevens. Two more Bonny Eagle sophomores, Kallie Warner and Allie Hesler, placed 26th and 30th.
The Bonny Eagle girls knew they had a good shot at their third state championship in a row after they won the regionals last weekend. They also turned in an excellent performance at the Festival of Champions in Belfast Oct. 3. Bonny Eagle (91) won the girls team title by one point over Harwood Union High School of Moretown, Vermont. Hesler (18:29.01) was the top finisher for the Scots, with a fifth place finish, while teammates Thibodeau (19:22.04) and senior Emmaline Pendleton finished 10th and 12th respectively. Nine of 10 BE runners finished in the top 100 out of 1200 runners at the meet.
The season isn't over yet. Bonny Eagle will compete in the New England cross country championships on Nov. 13 in Thetford, Vermont.
